Geretsberg is a small Upper Austrian village — population in 1920 was under a thousand — and this 10 Heller Notgeld is exactly the kind of emergency scrip that proliferated across Austria after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural municipalities unable to obtain adequate coinage. The dual signature requirement, Jakob Flachner and Franz Kreil, was a deliberate local accountability measure, not a printing-house convention.
The JPR0231a series is locally printed and shows it. Collector demand for Geretsberg material has always been thin, which paradoxically makes run-complete sets harder to assemble than those from larger towns that attracted more speculative hoarding at time of issue.
