Frankenfels is a small market town in the Pielach valley of Lower Austria, and this note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued by Austrian municipalities in 1920 when small-denomination coins effectively vanished from circulation. The Pressvereinsdruckerei in St. Pölten — a Catholic press cooperative — handled a significant share of regional Notgeld printing for Lower Austrian communities during this period, which accounts for the consistent typographic quality across several valley towns' issues.
Four signatories appear: the Bürgermeister Schagerl alongside three designated managing councillors, an unusually formal attestation structure for a 10 Heller note from a community this size.
