Comments

Eschenau is a small Lower Austrian village, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it resorted to issuing its own emergency paper after the First World War left Austria's small-denomination coinage effectively worthless. These Gemeindegeld notes — known collectively as Notgeld — filled a genuine transactional gap in rural areas where coins had been hoarded, melted, or simply stopped circulating. Eschenau's 10 Heller piece is catalogued under the Jaksc reference system specific to Austrian local issues, a classification Pick alone doesn't fully cover.

The printed date of 30 April 1945 in the catalog data is almost certainly a documentation or digitization error — Austrian municipal Notgeld of this type was universally a 1920–1922 phenomenon.
