Ernstbrunn is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency small-change currency produced by municipalities across Austria between roughly 1919 and 1921 to address a severe coin shortage following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. M. Salzer was one of several Viennese commercial printers who handled large volumes of these municipal commissions, turning them out quickly and cheaply.
The Jaksch/Pick JPR0183a series covers multiple denominations from Ernstbrunn. Collector demand for Austrian Notgeld varies sharply by commune and printer quality; Salzer-printed issues are generally the more workmanlike end of the spectrum.
