Enns — Roman Lauriacum, the legionary fortress town on the Danube — leaned into its ancient identity when issuing this Notgeld piece through the Musealverein Lauriacum, the local museum association. Using a cultural society rather than a municipal body as the issuing authority was not unusual in the Austrian Notgeld wave of 1920, but it does speak to how thoroughly the emergency money phenomenon had permeated civic life, down to antiquarian clubs.
