Eggenburg's 10 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities starved of usable small change. The Pressevereinsdruckerei — the press association's print shop, a distinctly local operation — handled production in-house, which kept the note entirely within the town's own hands from design to distribution.
Eggenburg had a population of only a few thousand at the time. That a town this size ran its own print operation capable of producing circulating currency says something about how thoroughly the old infrastructure had disintegrated by 1920.
