Egelsee is a small village in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note is among the thousands of Notgeld issues that Austrian municipalities were forced to produce between 1919 and 1921 when a chronic shortage of small coin — largely a consequence of wartime metal requisitioning — made everyday commerce nearly impossible. The commune contracted Chwala's Druck in Vienna, a printer that handled a significant volume of these local emergency issues.
Rohrhofer's design credit is uncommon enough in the Notgeld record to be worth noting, though little biographical detail on the designer has been established.
