Deutsch-Gabel (now Německé Jablonné, Czech Republic) hosted one of the many Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camps that issued their own internal scrip during the First World War. These Lagergeld notes were a deliberate administrative tool — by creating a closed monetary system, camp authorities prevented prisoners from accumulating currency usable outside the wire. The K.u.K. Kriegsgefangenenlager-Kommando issued denominations in Heller rather than Kronen, keeping individual note values too small for meaningful external use.
Campbell's listing at 1350 places this among hundreds of similar camp issues, most of which survive only in tiny quantities — not because they were rare in circulation, but because few bothered to preserve what was essentially disposable internal currency.
