Austrian Notgeld of this type emerged from a genuine coin shortage that persisted well after the First World War ended. Municipal and commercial issuers across Austria flooded the market with small-denomination emergency notes throughout 1920, with towns like Bischofshofen granted informal authority to produce their own — a decentralized stop-gap that the central government tolerated rather than sanctioned.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0088a places this among the documented Salzburg provincial issues. Bischofshofen's series is not among the rarer or more sought-after Notgeld runs, but complete municipal sets from smaller Salzburg towns do attract specialist collectors of Austrian provincial issues.
