Bergheim is a small parish municipality just north of Salzburg city, and its decision to issue Notgeld in 1920 reflects the severe small-coin shortage that paralyzed everyday commerce across Austria in the immediate postwar years. The federal government simply could not produce low-denomination coinage fast enough, and hundreds of municipalities stepped into the gap with locally printed emergency paper.
L. Pech handled both design and printing — a common arrangement for small-community issues where a local printer doubled as the de facto artist. The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0082Ia-10 places this within the Salzburg municipal Notgeld grouping, a series that has attracted collector attention disproportionate to its face value.
