Altschwendt is a small village in Upper Austria, and this note is one of thousands of Notgeld issues produced by Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 to address the chronic small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The commune's fiscal authority here is purely local — Franz Altmann's signature carries no weight beyond the village boundary.
The Jaksch/Pick reference places this firmly within the documented Austrian Notgeld corpus, but the JPR series entries for tiny Upper Austrian communes remain among the harder material to track in quantity.
