Comments

Altheim's notgeld was part of the sprawling Austrian municipal emergency currency wave that followed the economic dislocation of 1918–1920, when the new Republic's central monetary system couldn't keep small-denomination coinage in circulation. J. Stampfl in nearby Braunau handled production for several Upper Austrian communities during this period, making attribution straightforward. Three signatories — mayor, deputy mayor, and a council member — were required to validate issuance, a procedural formality that also left a useful authentication trail.
