Comments

Spitz an der Donau is a small wine-growing municipality in the Wachau valley of Lower Austria. This 10 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency municipal scrip produced after World War One when the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system left local communities starved of small change. Thousands of Austrian towns and villages printed their own Notgeld between roughly 1919 and 1922, Spitz among them.

The Heller denomination itself was already economically marginal by 1920, rapidly eroded by postwar inflation that would accelerate dramatically through 1921–22.
