Spitz an der Donau, a small wine-producing market town in the Wachau valley, issued notgeld like hundreds of Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire left the new republic with a crippling small-coin shortage. These local emergency issues were authorized under the Austrian notgeld framework of 1919–1920, with individual Gemeinden responsible for their own redemption — a promise many smaller issuers struggled to honor as inflation accelerated through 1921 and 1922.
Spitz issues from this period are modestly scarce; the town's small population meant limited print runs.
