Mittelberg is a small village in the Wienerwald foothills, and this note is a product of the acute small-change famine that gripped Austria in the immediate post-war years. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to produce their own fractional currency — the so-called Notgeld — to keep local commerce moving at all. Thousands of Austrian parishes did the same, but the sheer volume issued makes individual attribution to a specific printer nearly impossible without physical examination.
The dual-signature arrangement — Vizebürgermeister Traunfellner alongside Bürgermeister Gruber — reflects the legal requirement that municipal emergency currency carry countersignature authority.
