Radstadt's wartime Heller notgeld emerged from the same municipal desperation that drove hundreds of small Austrian market towns to print their own emergency scrip when metallic small change vanished almost entirely from circulation after 1914. Radstadt, a walled medieval town in Salzburg's Pongau district, had neither the resources nor the infrastructure for an elaborate printing commission — which is exactly what makes surviving examples interesting to anyone tracking the lower end of Austrian notgeld production.
Paper composition in issues of this type frequently causes condition problems; storage humidity in alpine communities did these notes few favors.
