Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Ludwig I, Grand Duke of Hesse, in high-relief left-facing profile, with finely detailed hair rendered in flowing waves. The truncation is plain and unadorned. The circumferential legend reads LUDEWIG GROSHERZOG VON HESSEN, distributed around the full periphery of the field, separated by the bust. A fine dentilated border frames the entire obverse.

Reverse description The Hessian arms displayed as a shield charged with a rampant lion, draped with an elaborate ermine-lined mantle tied at the top with cords and tassels, and surmounted by a grand ducal crown. Below the shield appears the Order of Ludwig cross. The date, flanked by the mint master's initials H and R, is inscribed in the lower field. The denomination legend ZEHN GULDEN arcs across the upper portion of the field. A fine dentilated border frames the entire reverse.
