The Bank of the Netherlands Antilles issued this piece during a period when the Antillean guilder was still pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 1.79 ANG per USD — a peg that has remained unchanged to this day, one of the longest-standing fixed exchange rates in the Western Hemisphere. Queen Juliana's portrait appears on Dutch colonial and kingdom coinage throughout her reign from 1948 until her abdication in 1980, making 1978 issues among the final years of her effigy on Antillean silver.
