Japan issued occupation currency for the Dutch East Indies almost immediately after taking control of the archipelago in early 1942, and this 10 Gulden note was part of the first wave — deliberately denominated in guilders rather than yen to ease acceptance among a population already familiar with Dutch colonial money. The strategy worked well enough in practice, though inflation driven by overprinting eventually gutted whatever confidence had been built.
The National Printing Bureau in Tokyo produced the series, which meant supply chains ran across contested waters at precisely the wrong moment in the war. Notes reaching the Indies late in the occupation were sometimes in poor physical condition before they ever touched a cashier's hand.
