Obverse description The obverse carries the Württemberg coat of arms at centre top, flanked by folio and serial number designations. The denomination 'ZEHN GULDEN' is set in bold letterpress at centre, with the full bank title 'Die Württembergische NOTENBANK' above in ornate script. Two large allegorical vignette groups frame the design on either side — each composed of cherubs and winged female figures in classical style — with large Roman numeral 'X' numerals at lower left and right, and an oval seal with a manuscript signature at centre below the text.

Comments

The Württembergische Notenbank was one of the few private regional banks permitted to issue notes under the patchwork German monetary framework that preceded the Reichsbank's establishment in 1876. This 10 Gulden note dates from 1871 — the year the German Empire was proclaimed — and denominates in Gulden rather than Mark, placing it squarely in the transitional moment before decimal Mark coinage was imposed across the new Reich.

The Gulden-denominated series was effectively obsolete within a few years, withdrawn as standardization took hold. Survivors tend to come from bank vaults rather than wallets.
