| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse carries a manuscript cancellation notice written entirely by hand in a careful 19th-century cursive script in blue-violet ink, covering the full face of the note within a simple ruled border. The text records the formal withdrawal of this note series on 10 December 1879 and its replacement by notes of equivalent value, certified at Willemstad, Curaçao on 16 December 1899, and signed by the Finance Administrator and Chairman of the Bank. |

The Bank van Curaçao was established in 1828 as the first bank in the Dutch Caribbean — its early notes circulated across an island economy built almost entirely on the transit trade, with little domestic production to anchor monetary demand. By the 1850s the gulden notes were functioning as much as commercial instruments among merchants as orthodox retail currency.
Issues from this decade are extraordinarily rare in any condition. The bank's total capitalization was modest and note production correspondingly limited, which means surviving examples are primarily known from institutional holdings rather than the collector market.
