De Javasche Bank, established in 1828 as the colonial central bank of the Dutch East Indies, issued this 10 Gulden note during a period when paper currency in the archipelago was met with persistent public reluctance. Silver coin remained the preferred medium of exchange across Java, and the bank's early notes circulated primarily among European merchants and the colonial administration rather than the broader population.
The embossed seal as the sole security feature reflects both the printing technology of the period and the relatively contained circulation this note was expected to see. Pick 41 is among the earlier surviving issues from Javasche Bank, and examples in any condition are genuinely scarce — the tropical climate of Java was catastrophic for paper, and institutional destruction of returned notes was thorough.
