In 1949, Poland's communist government was actively reshaping the coinage system inherited from the postwar transition period, testing multiple compositions before settling on aluminum for most small denominations. This nickel trial strike for the 10 Groszy was part of that evaluation process — nickel was ultimately rejected, with aluminum adopted instead, almost certainly for cost and material availability reasons tied to Soviet-bloc industrial priorities.
Proof and trial pieces from this Polish series surface rarely, and the Fischer catalog remains the primary reference for distinguishing genuine pattern strikes from later restrikes.
