In 1949, Polish monetary authorities were deciding between copper-nickel and aluminum for the new People's Republic coinage. Trial strikes in CuNi were produced for evaluation before aluminum was ultimately chosen for the circulating series — a decision driven largely by postwar metal economics and Soviet-bloc material allocation priorities. Most CuNi trials from this period were either destroyed or retained in state collections.
