The Third Polish Republic's coinage was introduced in stages following the 1989 transition from communism, with denominations redenominated at 10,000 old złotych to one new złoty under a 1994 reform that formally took effect January 1, 1995. Coins dated 1990 through 1994 are technically pre-reform issues circulating in a country that had not yet legally completed its monetary overhaul.

The long production run from Mennica Polska reflects a stable small-denomination piece that required little modification across nearly three decades — Warsaw's mint adjusted planchet sourcing periodically but made no substantive changes to the type.
