| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Saxony, surmounted by a crested helm with elaborate mantling, flanked on either side by the wings of the Saxon electoral eagle displayed. The armorial composition is set within a beaded inner circle. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design along the outer rim, reading IOH: GEORG: D: G: DUX SAX: I: C: M: A: & W: EL:, identifying the issuer as John George, by the grace of God Duke of Saxony. The overall style is characteristic of early seventeenth-century German hammered silver coinage. |
