Ferdinando III spent most of his reign ruling Sicily under British protection after Napoleon's forces drove him from Naples in 1806. The British subsidized his court and effectively ran the island's defense, but also pressured him into granting a liberal constitution in 1812 — a document he immediately set about dismantling once Wellington's campaigns made the French threat recede. These copper issues of 1814–15 land precisely in that window of restored royal confidence, minted just before the Congress of Vienna handed him back Naples and prompted his rebranding as Ferdinando I of the Two Sicilies in 1816, ending the distinct Sicilian coinage sequence entirely.
