Waldeck was one of Germany's smallest and most economically marginal states — a principality that had functioned as a Prussian protectorate since 1867 and was formally absorbed into Prussia in 1929. By 1923, the hyperinflation crisis had pushed even tiny provincial governments into issuing their own emergency currency, and Waldeck was no exception. The Goldpfennig denomination is notable: rather than chasing the worthless Papiermark with ever-larger zeros, this series pegged its face value to gold, a deliberate hedge against the collapse then destroying ordinary savings.
The Weigelsche Hof- und Regierungsbuchdruckerei in Mengeringhausen was the official court and government press for Waldeck — a small regional operation, not a major security printer, which shows in the modest production quality typical of this notgeld run.
