Liechtenstein's sovereignty is often dated to 1806, when Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire and the principality — having been a direct imperial fief — became fully independent without being absorbed into the Confederation of the Rhine. Johann I, who ruled from 1805 to 1836, navigated that transition with enough diplomatic dexterity to keep the tiny state intact through the Congress of Vienna and the subsequent German Confederation period. The principality's rulers had not even visited it in person for over a century at that point.
