Hans-Adam II formally assumed sovereign authority from his father Franz Josef II on August 26, 1984, though Franz Josef retained the title of reigning prince until his death in November 1989. This coin marks the formal succession, closing a reign that had lasted since 1938 — through the Second World War, during which Liechtenstein's neutrality was tested by its geographic enclosure between two Axis powers and the postwar seizure of Liechtenstein family estates in Czechoslovakia by the Beneš decrees, losses the ruling family is still pursuing in international courts.
