France's hosting of the 1998 FIFA World Cup generated one of the most extensive official commemorative coin programs in modern French minting history — dozens of issues across multiple denominations, many produced in very high quantities. This 10 Francs piece was struck in the final years before the franc was rendered obsolete by euro adoption in 2002, making the entire 1998 commemorative series among the last silver franc issues the Monnaie de Paris would produce for circulation-intended coinage.
