Obverse description The obverse presents an elaborate allegorical composition commemorating the centenary of Victor Hugo's death. A central open book overlaid with a writing quill dominates the field, accompanied by an antique theatrical mask symbolising Hugo's career as playwright. Surrounding vignettes depict key characters and scenes from his literary works: the façade of Notre-Dame de Paris in the background, a revolutionary barricade upon which Gavroche is shown straddling, and the figure of Cosette. Hugo's facsimile signature appears within the field, and the denomination '10 FRANCS' is inscribed at the top in two lines. The circular legend reads 'RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE', with the date '1985' also incorporated.
