Reverse description The reverse presents an allegorical composition in which the facades of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Milan Cathedral appear in the background, referencing the two cities most closely associated with Stendhal's life and literary career. In the foreground, an open book with a writing quill laid across it symbolises his literary achievement, while a laurel sprig alludes to the honors of his diplomatic consulship. The denomination '10 FRANCS' and the date '1983' appear in the field, accompanied by the engraver's signature 'J. MAUVIEL'. The composition reflects the artistic conventions of French piéfort commemorative issues of the 1980s.

Additional information

Piéforts from the Monnaie de Paris in the early 1980s were issued in platinum almost as an afterthought — the silver piéforts in this commemorative series drove the program, with platinum strikes produced in quantities so small they were sold almost exclusively to institutional collectors and foreign buyers. The Stendhal issue honored the bicentennial of the novelist's birth in Grenoble in 1783.

Mintage figures for this platinum strike are not independently verified across standard references, which itself tells you something about how narrowly it circulated within the collector market.
