This essai was produced in the immediate aftermath of Grace Kelly's death in September 1982 — she died on the 14th, the result of a stroke suffered while driving on the Corniche. The piece was never developed into a circulating issue. Monaco's commemorative program had already been advancing the joint portrait concept before her death made the subject permanently retrospective.
Essais of this type were struck in strictly limited numbers for archival and presentation purposes by the Monnaie de Paris, which has historically managed Monaco's coin production under longstanding agreement.
