The Prince Pierre Foundation, established in 1966 by Prince Rainier III in honor of his father Pierre de Polignac, annually awards prizes for literature, musical composition, and fine arts — making it Monaco's principal cultural institution. This 1989 issue commemorated the foundation's continued patronage at a moment when Monaco was aggressively cultivating an identity beyond banking and tourism. The copper-aluminium-nickel alloy was by then standard for French-aligned commemorative francs, following Monnaie de Paris practice rather than any Monaco-specific decision.
