Additional information

Essai pieces struck by the Monnaie de Paris for Monaco were produced in extremely limited numbers — typically no more than 500 examples — as official trial strikes submitted for approval rather than public circulation. This 1974 gold essai was never adopted for a circulating issue; Monaco's monetary agreement with France meant that French franc coinage remained the practical currency of the principality, and large-denomination Monégasque gold pieces functioned almost entirely as collector and presentation items. The Gadoury reference MC156 confirms its status within the established essai sequence for Rainier III's reign.
