Essais produced by the Monnaie de Paris for Monaco in this period were official trial strikes submitted for approval rather than circulation — Rainier III had ascended only in May 1949 following the death of Louis II, and the new coinage program required formal authorization before any circulation issue could proceed. This particular essai was never followed by a corresponding circulation gold 10 Francs, making it a dead-end type with no produced successor.
