Essai pieces from Monaco's 1950 series were struck in extremely limited numbers as pattern submissions and presentation pieces — never intended for general release. Rainier III had assumed the throne only in 1949 following the death of Louis II, and the new coinage program required official approval before full production could proceed. These aluminium-bronze essais exist in quantities typically counted in the dozens rather than thousands.
