The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued commemorative gold pieces under the Banque Centrale du Congo for decades, frequently honoring foreign heads of state — a practice that generates hard currency through collector sales rather than domestic circulation. Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 marked 70 years on the throne, a reign that began the same year Congo was still a Belgian colony. She died in September of that year, making this among the final issues struck in her honor before her death.
