Stephen IX's pontificate lasted barely eight months, from August 1057 to March 1058, yet he managed to appoint Frederick of Lorraine as his successor before dying of fever in Florence — a move that briefly upended the traditional role of the Roman aristocracy in papal elections. He was also the brother of Godfrey III, Duke of Lorraine, which made his tenure as much a political instrument of Lotharingian ambition as a spiritual one.
