The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was established in 1966 to manage currency across French Pacific territories following the dissolution of the Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer's monetary functions in the region. This piedfort — struck at double the standard planchet thickness — was produced as a presentation piece, almost certainly for official distribution rather than circulation. Piedforts of this era from IEOM are genuinely scarce; the institution's early issues saw extremely limited piedfort production, and most went directly to government archives or collectors through official channels.
