Rwanda's earliest coinage dates to 1964, the year the newly independent nation — separated from Burundi only in 1962 after the dissolution of the Ruanda-Urundi trust territory — was establishing its monetary institutions from scratch. The Banque Nationale du Rwanda was itself founded in 1964, meaning this pattern was struck in the same year the issuing authority came into existence.
Pattern issues from this foundational moment are exceptionally rare. Most were submitted to government authorities for approval and never returned to circulation channels; survivors exist almost exclusively in institutional or specialist collections.
