Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing effigy of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail including his characteristic beard and moustache. The legend NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR arcs around the periphery, with NAPOLEON III to the left and EMPEREUR to the right. The date 1855 appears in the exergue below the truncation. The portrait, engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre, displays a classical neoclassical style befitting an imperial essai piece.
