Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Napoleon III facing right, rendered in high relief with finely engraved hair and a prominent imperial goatee and moustache. The portrait displays the characteristic naturalistic style of chief engraver Jacques-Jean Barre. The legend NAPOLEON III arcs along the left rim and EMPEREUR along the right rim in raised Latin capitals. The engraver's name BARRE appears in small letters at the base of the neck, flanked by decorative floral stops. The broad flat field and crisp beaded border are characteristic of a Monnaie de Paris presentation pattern.
