The monument is depicted in relief showing its characteristic multi-tiered structure with a colonnade, stepped podium, and a quadriga or animal finial at the apex of the pyramidal roof. Flanking cypress trees are rendered in the field to either side of the monument, evoking its ancient Anatolian setting. Burundi's ongoing Seven Wonders of the Ancient World bullion series has produced a string of issues since the mid-2010s, most struck by European private mints under license. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus — built in the 4th century BC for Mausolus, satrap of Caria, by his widow and sister Artemisia II — gave the English language the word "mausoleum." The structure survived largely intact into the medieval period before being systematically dismantled by the Knights of St. John, who used its stonework to fortify their castle at Bodrum.
