Reverse description A detailed bust portrait of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo (1254–1324) occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter view wearing a turban and draped robes, and holding a book inscribed IL MILIONE in his right hand. To the left of the figure, a tall-masted sailing vessel is rendered in fine relief against the field. To the right, an ornate navigational compass rose bears the dates 1254 and 1324 at its center, commemorating Polo's birth and death years. The legend MARCO POLO arcs along the upper periphery, and the issue year 2024 is inscribed in large numerals along the lower border.

Additional information

Burundi has no historical connection to Marco Polo. This is a privately commissioned bullion issue — the type routinely contracted through European minting houses to smaller sovereign states whose names lend legal tender status to collector products with no genuine domestic circulation. The face value is nominal fiction.
