Niger's 1968 pattern coinage was produced in the lead-up to the country's adoption of the CFA franc zone monetary framework, when several West African states briefly explored independent symbolic issues. Patterns in gold-plated aluminium from this period were typically struck by the Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris) as presentation or approval pieces — never intended for circulation and distributed in minimal quantities to government officials and archives.
Surviving examples outside French institutional collections are rare.
