Niger's 1968 essai coinage was produced in the immediate aftermath of independence-era currency restructuring, when the West African CFA franc was the practical monetary reality and these struck pieces existed primarily as proofs of concept for a national coinage that would never enter circulation. The lion series in gold was issued in extremely limited numbers — essais of this type were typically distributed to collectors, government officials, and foreign mints rather than the public.
At 31.78 grams in .900 gold, the piece contains more fine gold than a standard French 100-franc coin of the same period.
