Rwanda's 1974 coinage was struck during the presidency of Juvénal Habyarimana, who had seized power in a bloodless coup just the year before and was in the process of consolidating the single-party state under the MRND. The "large type" designation distinguishes this issue from the reduced KM#14.2 variant that followed — a practical response to rising copper-nickel prices that prompted a quiet redesign rather than a formal redenomination.
