The "La Vie en Rose" series issued by the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2001 belongs to a wave of novelty collector coinage that flooded the market after the country began licensing its minting rights to European producers — primarily in Belgium and Germany — during the late 1990s. The DRC had no meaningful domestic coin production infrastructure at the time, and these pieces were never intended for circulation.
